Beatles Remasters Sell 2.2m Copies in Less Than Two Weeks

"Remaster them, and they will be bought" may now be the mantra at EMI after the success of the Beatles remastering project. According to figures from the company, the new versions of the 14 Fab Four albums have sold more than 2.25m copies around the world following their release on Sept. 9.

Available both as individual albums but also in highly-collectible mono and stereo box sets, the albums predictably sold like proverbial hot cakes around the world, especially in the Beatlemanic territories of the US, UK and Japan.

In the UK, the albums sold 345,000 copies in the first 11 days. The Beatles set a record for the most albums by one artist in the UK top 75 at the same time, the UK Official Charts Company said. In last week's album chart the Beatles had four albums in the top 10, seven in the top 40, and a whopping 16 in the top 75.

The fact all 14 remastered versions of the albums were released at the same time may have split the Beatles-buying vote, however -- the Beatles couldn't claim number one in the week of the albums' release, with the highest placing being number five for 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band.'

Meaghan Smith, 'Heartbroken' -- Song Premiere

Filed under: MP3, New Music, Exclusive, Canada

When they're not broken or too busy keeping the beat, our hearts have been known to sing us songs. Meaghan Smith has decided to return the compliment. "'Heartbroken' was inspired by the impossible heart that beats in my own chest," she tells Spinner. "After years of being romantically duped by the one thing that is supposed to be keeping me alive, I figured it was about time I write the darn thing its own song."

At the same time, and to her credit, Smith didn't want 'Heartbroken' to live up to any preconceived notions you might have of a song about a heart, written and sung by an acoustic singer-songwriter from Canada. If her cover of the Pixies' 'Here Comes Your Man' -- as featured in the film '500 Days of Summer' -- didn't prove it, Smith isn't exactly a traditionalist when it comes to folk music. In fact, her forthcoming album, 'The Cricket's Orchestra' (due Oct. 6) features Mellotron as well as a horn section. Oh, and Kid Koala plays turntables on a track alongside a string quartet.

Ryan Adams Responds to Courtney Love's Repeated Attacks

After more than a year of online goading, Ryan Adams just got around to hitting back at Courtney Love. Adams released a statement in response to Love's MySpace blog blasts and Twitter taunts, suggesting that she is confusing him with producer Jim Barber.

"I have never had any romantic, personal or financial involvement with Courtney Love," Adams insisted in a statement to Gawker. "She is confusing me with her ex, who produced my 'Rock n Roll' record, which was financed solely by Universal Music."

Walkmen Get Parental Approval at Homecoming Show

Filed under: Concerts and Tours, News

Who says parents can't appreciate rock music played at the appropriate volume? The Walkmen played a noisy homecoming show at Washington, D.C.'s 9:30 Club on Tuesday night to a crowd of parents, family and friends, including singer Hamilton Leithauser's dad, who was also dressed in the band's uniform of tucked in dress shirt and khakis.

While the Walkmen's albums may be known for ambience and antique instrumentation -- they favor a stand up piano and organs on many of their recent songs -- their live sound is nothing short of loud. The band sped through songs from their latest album 'You & Me,' including crowd sing-alongs on 'Donde Esta la Playa' and 'The New Year.'

Mamas and the Papas: Mackenzie Phillips Says She Had Sexual Relationship With Papa John

Here's the ickiest story you'll read all day (please, for your sake, don't try to find anything ickier): Actress Mackenzie Phillips told Oprah in an interview (and also in her memoir) that she had a long-time incestuous sexual relationship with her father John Phillips of Mamas and the Papas.

Phillips says she had sex with her father the night before she was to marry Jeff Sessler, a member of the Rolling Stones entourage, in 1979, according to People.com.

"On the eve of my wedding, my father showed up, determined to stop it," writes Phillips, who was 19 at the time and a heavy drug user, according to People.com. "I had tons of pills, and Dad had tons of everything too. Eventually I passed out on Dad's bed."

Phillips, best known as Julie Cooper on the sitcom "One Day at a Time," says the sexual relationship became consensual as her life began to spiral out of control.

"I was a fragment of a person, and my secret isolated me," she writes, according to People.com. "One night Dad said, 'We could just run away to a country where no one would look down on us. There are countries where this is an accepted practice. Maybe Fiji.' "

I think the ickiest part is where she calls him dad. Phillips died in 2001, and left this out of his own memoir. [CNN]

Marilyn Manson Gets Swine Flu

Metal icon and all round hell raiser - literally - Marilyn Manson has admitted he is suffering from swine flu.

Swine flu has, so far, not had the affect on the music industry that many predicted. Emerging from Mexico the mutated virus seemed unstoppable, and has killed several thousand people across the globe.

It was feared that this summer's festival would become a write off, as fans stayed away from crowded areas for fear of catching the disease.

However the summer survived and to date there have been relatively few incidents of people catching swine flu through attending large scale music shows.

In a new twist, it seems that the disease may end Marilyn Manson's ongoing tour. The shock rocker is currently touring throughout the United States but in a new message to fans revealed that he has come down with swine flu.

Speaking on the social networking site Facebook the singer revealed that he had been diagnosed with H1N1.

"So I have officially been diagnosed, by a real doctor, with THE SWINE FLU," he wrote.

"I know everyone will suggest that fucking a pig is how this disease was obtained. However, the doctor said, my past choices in women have, in 'no way' contributed to... me acquiring this mysterious sickness. Unfortunately, I am going to survive. M."

Marilyn Manson released his new album 'The High End Of Low' earlier this year. A return to form for the singer is became his biggest hit in the Billboard charts for six years.

Eminem: Eminem and Apple Might Be Headed to Court Over Copyright Claims

Back in March, Eminem lost a lawsuit against his record label for a bigger piece of digital sale royalties, and now the rapper is fighting Apple and iTunes, claiming that Apple has no right to sell his music on iTunes because he never gave them permission, and they don't give him royalties directly.

The case, which could go to court on Thursday, gets down to the question of who actually owns musicians' songs, and in which cases artists are entitled to royalties. Apple contends that Aftermath, Em's label, received royalties for his songs being on iTunes, but Em says he never granted Apple the right to the songs in the first place. It's not clear if Eminem himself will testify at the trial, if it indeed gets that far. [Reuters]

T-Pain: "Take Your Shirt Off" (MP3)

It turns out that "Dope" isn't really a single from T-Pain's upcoming Revolver album; that honor goes to the considerably more Auto-Tuned "Take Your Shirt Off." The song has a pretty great* one-liner, "twist it in the air like a helicopter," and the best masked "motherfuckers" of all time (they actually sound like the sound you hear on the radio when "motherfucker" is censored). I just wonder how long we will all tolerate this kind of track from T-Pain. Probably for a while yet.

Big Boi: Big Boi Does New Track from Sir Luscious Left Foot, Album Might Actually Exist

Big Boi's Sir Luscious Left Foot is fast becoming his Cuban Linx II, Detox, and Chinese Democracy; the album has been pushed back about a dozen times (it's original release was set for summer of 2008), and now he's got the masters and is looking for a new label. The album might actually exist, and be out soon however, since Big has started doing some performances, including the brief video above that features footage of a new track that is allegedly on the album. Sir Luscious still doesn't have a release date, but at least it seems like there are some songs prepared for it. [2 Dope Boyz]

Cursive: "Let Me Up" (Video)

Cursive are still promoting the shit out of their sixth album, Mama, I'm Swollen; here's a pretty gnarly video for new single, "Let Me Up," a clip that finds Tim Kasher driving in a car that is in the middle of blowing up, and shots of people drowning, mob hits and some other crazy shit. Who knew that Saddle Creek had this kind of special effects budget for their videos? Stereogum's got the clip.

Kanye West, Mos Def: Mos Def Gets Gully on Jay Leno, Says He Has a "Banana Boat Face"

Just when you thought all the Kanyetroversy was about to die down in regards to Kanye's "outburst" at the VMAs, someone goes and asks Mos Def what he thought about the situation:

“And Jay Leno, with your banana boat face having ass, you need to apologize to Kanye West for having him with his mother [would say], what she would think, she would think she'd need to smack your fucking banana face-having ass face off trying to be slick.”

The "banana boat face" comment would have made me chortle heartily when I was 11, but he kind of has a point. It was not profound for Jay to ask Kanye what his mom would think; it was kind of a dick move. His mom is dead. Thanks for reminding him Jay. Also, Jay Leno is the worst (I am a doctor of scientific facts). [HipHopWired]

Yoko Ono: "Moving Mountains" ft. Sean Lennon and Antony (Live Video)

It's been a damn fine month for Yoko Ono; her dead husband's music moves huge units, and a videogame she helped curate does too. This week, she released a new album, Between My Head and the Sky, which features a new version of the Plastic Ono Band. And then today she released this live video for "Moving Mountains," an atonal mess of a song that features Antony and her son Sean helping out. Good month for Ono, not so good moment for fans of coherent songs. [Pitchfork]

Diesel:U:Music Tour Hits London

Top fashion label Diesel has revealed plans for a stunning part in London as part of their Diesel:U:Music world tour.

As well as bringing you some top quality clobber Diesel specialise in holding some of the wildest parties around. Last year's xXx event took over superclub matter and left be a trail of shattered ear drums.

Today (September 23rd) Diesel announced plans to return to London for another huge party with a mouth watering line up. Set to take place on October 1st at P3 - a three story concrete bunker under the University of Westminster - this looks like being one of year's most striking live music events.

Headliners have been confirmed as none other than The Big Pink. One of the year's most keenly anticipated newcomers, noise-pop duo The Big Pink are in demand after a summer spend blowing minds at festivals up and down the country.

With their debut album hot off the presses, The Big Pink are set to join a line up littered with talent. Scottish hip hop group (no, seriously) Young Fathers are due to perform, with their stage show having to be seen to be believed.

Dubstep duo Joker and MC Nomad are set to perform, bringing a little bass to the subterranean proceedings. Amongst the other star names due to line up for this event are The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt!, HEARTSREVOLUTION, Amwe and more.

Tickets for the Diesel:U:Music event are set to go on sale from September 12th through Diesel stores nationwide. Just the first part of the UK leg of the Diesel:U:Music world tour, expect more announcements on extra shows to come!

Diesel:U:Music takes over P3 in London on October 1st.

Killer Mike: Killer Mike No Longer That Much of a Killer

Killer Mike, underground rapper with a modicum of hype, has dropped the "killer" part of his moniker and rechristened himself Mike Bigga, in a move to get his name out there in commercial circles. I'm not sure calling yourself Mike Bigga is a move up from Killer Mike, but he's got to get paid. Here's what he said about the name change:

"I love how smart the hip-hop fans are and they say 'Man, this guy is dope. Why he so slept on.' Then, it always is a comment under there that be like 'I don't suppose the name Killer Mike be holding him back? You can't get corporate sponsorship with that."

Notice: If you comment on message boards, rappers will change their names. [HipHopWired]

Grizzly Bear: Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear Announces His Own Record Label

Chris Taylor, Grizzly Bear's bass clarinet expert (he's the only one alive, so they're lucky they found him) has announced the launch of his own record label, Terrible Records (notice I avoided the easy pun headline?). The label is set to hit the ground running; On Oct. 13, Terrible will release "Ghosts," the debut track from Taylor's solo project CANT. The b-side of the 7-inch will feature an unearthed Arthur Russell track that was recorded in the '70s.

Then on Oct. 28, Terrible will release All of the Fire, a 10-inch EP from New York band Acrylics, which Taylor produced. Dude is mad busy. [Pitchfork]
